Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In this cityscape by Adolfo Grassi, the quotidian aspect prevails, the frank and sincere realism of everyday life in a city setting. The protagonists of Adolfo Grassi's works are, in fact, evocative glimpses of his native Puglia.
Adolfo Grassi's style is truly distinctive and original. The Apulian landscape, with its whitewashed villages and farmhouses, is rendered in his works using a subtle, elegant line. Objects are emptied of their volumes, and the design and rhythm of the composition prevail. The houses are rendered with delicate hatching, giving them subtle shadows. The paint is applied in very distinct chromatic areas. White predominates, while the background features a magical starry sky.
Adolfo Grassi was born in 1939 and has been called the painter of Puglia. His paintings are striking for the pastel colors he uses to depict the Apulian countryside and farmhouses shrouded in the intense blue of the sky, which at times seems to open toward dawn. In this way, the painter pursues memory, recollection, and dreams, conveying a sense of dreaminess and magic. An internationally renowned artist, his works are present in many public and private collections.
