Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

This lithograph is particularly interesting in relation to the aesthetic spirit of Adolfo Saporetti, an artist always eager to play with visual languages. In this case, his ironic and creative spirit mimics the ancient style of a sixteenth-century sanguine, creating a visionary and mocking image. The figure's features are barely hinted at, emerging from the neutral space of the work. The execution of such a work requires extraordinary execution technique, not only in terms of the nuance and lightness of the line, but also in the very conception of the drawing.
Adolfo Saporetti was born in Ravenna in 1907 and died in Milan in 1974. His education took place primarily in Paris, where he attended the Beaux Arts school and the Académie Julien, holding his first solo exhibition in the French capital in 1939. He subsequently spent a long time in New York, in the multifaceted and creative milieu of Greenwich Village. In 1961, he returned to Italy, settling in Casoli, Tuscany. Adolfo Saporetti's poetics are imbued with creativity, unpredictability, and irony. He was a painter always ready to play with visual communication, denying reality and transforming it through expressionist and surreal lens.
