Description of the work
Description of the work
Adriano Fava's half-length portrait suggests the nature of the master's art. The fascination with the female figure, a centuries-old tradition in painting, finds a unique and unique appeal in Fava. The woman portrayed comes alive in the painting in her stylized form. The total absence of perspective, like chiaroscuro shadows, reveals an abstract space where the figure seems to move. The gesture of the arm, combined with the parted lips and the directed gaze, suggest a startle. A startle that seems interrupted and suspended in the fixity of the painted material. We note a play of balance and suspension between the physicality of the figure and its ideal representation.
Adriano Fava's style seeks a mechanical reconstruction of tangible reality, drawing essentially on Picasso and Cubism. The most interesting aspect of Fava's figures lies in the juxtaposition of Cubist research with the fantastical geometry of Paul Klee. What distinguishes the master is his decidedly more fluid style, made up of sinuous lines that temper the purely mechanical aspect of his subjects, adding a material component to the canvas.
Adriano Fava graduated from the State Institute of Ceramics in Faenza, where he studied under the sculptor Angelo Biancini. The artist's creative and exhibition activity began around 1958, during his years of study and training in ceramics. 1988 marked a pivotal moment in his career with his meeting with Mario Marescalchi, owner of the eponymous gallery in Bologna and Cortina d'Ampezzo, who introduced him to the small group of young artists he promoted. Research underpins every work of this master of modern Italian art. His bold and confident style, his unparalleled sense of color in geometric figuration, have earned him recognition among critics and the market as one of Italy's leading emerging talents.
