Description of the work
Description of the work
A popular iconography throughout the history of Western art, the Crucifixion has its origins in the early Christian era and has developed over the centuries, culminating in the most recent expressions of contemporary art. The traditional iconography of Jesus on the cross has countless variations, from the simplest, featuring only the crucified Jesus Christ, to the version accompanied by the "mourners," the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist. In the Middle Ages, Crucifixion scenes began to become increasingly elaborate: thieves' crosses were added, and, gradually, more and more figures were added, until they became the subject of large choral scenes.
In this work, Marchionni draws inspiration from Renaissance art not only for the thematic choice but also for the interpretative approach. In addition to seeking a perfect naturalistic rendering of the subject, the artist creates a perfectly proportioned and calibrated composition. The expansive volumes and monumentality of Christ denote a revisitation of sixteenth-century painting. The pictorial interpretation, then, deliberately introduces a patina of antiquity, as if the work were a torn fresco bearing the signs of time on its surface. However, everything is given a new, contemporary contextualization, and the composition unfolds in a complex, multidimensional space.
Painter born in Spello in 1954. His entire artistic research is grounded in the recovery of memories and emotions from the past. His paintings appear like fragments of torn frescoes, references to 15th-century Umbrian painting, of which Marchionni is a great connoisseur. His sculptures presuppose a study of Renaissance harmony and proportion. However, this process of recovering memory merges, in Marchionni, with a careful exploration of artistic language in keeping with a contemporary sensibility.
