Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," which means to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images.
The work is particularly interesting as it bears witness to the moment when Monachesi, having transcended his Expressionist and Futurist phases, founded the "Agravitazionale" movement and began signing his work with the pseudonym "Agrà." For Monachesi, agravitationalism is the realization of an aesthetic utopia embodied in the lightness of form. While this gave rise, in his sculptures, to works in foam rubber or polymethyl methacrylate, in his painting, agravitationalism finds expression in a minimalist abstraction. The purity of geometric forms and colors is enhanced by a two-dimensional dimension. The space, completely white, is rarefied, filled with a few elements and sparse graphic signs. Everything, therefore, conveys a sense of ethereal lightness.
Sante Monachesi was born in Macerata in 1910 and died in Rome in 1991. Along with Bruno Tano, he was one of the leading proponents of Futurism in the Marche region, founding the "Futurist Movement in the Marche" and the group "Umberto Boccioni, Futurists in the Marche." His first solo exhibition was in Recanati in 1934: it marked the beginning of an intense exhibition program that would lead him to exhibit several times at the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial. In 1964, he founded the "Agravitazionale" movement and drafted the first "Agrà" manifesto.
