Alberto Bontempi - Vase of Flowers

Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.

Alberto Bontempi's pictorial language in this work relies primarily on the expressive qualities of color. The drawing structure and perspective grid are completely dismantled to make way for the force of the brushstrokes and the flow of the gesture. However, Bontempi remains firmly anchored to phenomenal reality, because even with his colorful, extremely dynamic brushstrokes, he manages to delineate the essence of the vase of flowers, imbuing it with expressive vigor. The rhythm of the composition is particularly elaborate: on a substantially two-dimensional space, the brushstrokes unfold in arabesques, following a continuous and vital flow.

Alberto Bontempi (June 2, 1934–February 26, 2018) lived and worked in Cologno Monzese in his studio "Tre Arti." A painter and printmaker, he held exhibitions in cities such as Udine, Ferrara, Milan, Turin, Lecce, Foggia, and Varallo. His work has been covered by many important critics.
