Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
The works of the Campestrini family are distinguished by a firm commitment to realism, and we can see how these painters, even within an academic conception, are attentive to the innovations proposed by contemporary art. Indeed, both in the execution of the human figure (in nudes and portraits) and in still lifes, the naturalistic rendering is achieved through an extraordinary technique that allows for the faithful recording of sensory data. Furthermore, the full forms of the subjects reveal a precise desire to exalt plasticity. However, it is in the pictorial application that one perceives the full innovation of the Campestrinis' artistic approach. The brushstrokes are always dynamic, making the subjects' volumes quiver with atmospheric and luminous vibrations. The concreteness of the figures stands out even more in a decontextualized, almost abstract space, rendered through the painter's gestural intervention. In this particular work, Alcide Davide Campestrini's unfiltered realism is already evident in the choice of subject: the naked body of an old man, displayed almost casually, without any kind of idealization. The thick brushstrokes define the anatomy of the chest along with the signs of decay. Likewise, through color, the artist carves out the figure's face, characterizing it with deep shadows.
Alcide Davide Campestrini was born in Trento in 1863 and died in Milan in 1940. After attending the local drawing school, he went to Milan, where he enrolled in the Brera painting courses. After winning the Antonio Gavazzi Prize (1891), Campestrini began an intense international exhibition activity. From the early twentieth century, he devoted himself to military subjects of patriotic inspiration. The successes achieved in exhibitions, which had consolidated his reputation in the historical-mythological and portraiture genres, contributed significantly to the painter's numerous commissions. His frequent holiday resorts on the Ligurian coast provided an opportunity to devote himself to landscape or figure painting en plein air, a field in which the artist achieved notable results from the point of view of the study of light, in harmony with the most advanced pictorial experiences of the Lombard artistic circle of the Scapigliatura.
