Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The artist Aldo Affortunati specializes in the production of lyrical and sentimental genre scenes.
The work highlights the artist Aldo Affortunati's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely constructed through color, and the brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the scene, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the extremely synthetic and dynamic brushstrokes intervene, moving the space and almost deforming things, with the intent of capturing all the vibrations of light and life in the subject. Thus, on a substantially two-dimensional surface, squashed into the foreground, the subject is constructed by the painter through frenetic, sinuous lines, while the space is characterized by rapid brushstrokes, dense with color.
Born in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana on August 11, 1906, to a Florentine father. He lives in Florence. He began his success with vivid Tuscan landscapes, created in the spirit and technique of the Macchiaioli, but soon transcended that initial stage with explorations of light and movement. The macchia seemed too static and fixed to him, so he began, as he put it, "fraying" it, to create more vibration. Then he abandoned the brush for a mestichino (small spatula), with which, by throwing colors in masses onto the canvas without spreading them, he achieved greater brilliance. His remarkable paintings, even large ones, are full of figures in motion, drawn with extraordinary vigor and enlivened by vivid colors with intense light in the reflections of velvets and silks. His works are included in collections in the United States, Brazil, Switzerland, France, Germany, Belgium, and others. He recently achieved great success in an exhibition in New York.
