Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The "seascape" in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or in romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations.
In terms of style, Aldo Conti's landscapes present a perfect fusion of realism and a delicate impressionistic approach to sensory details. On the one hand, the artist precisely describes the view in all its details, with a strong sense of naturalistic rendering combined with a lyricism of the everyday in simple picturesque glimpses. On the other, his refined pictorial technique allows him to convey a sense of immediacy to the canvas, thanks to rapid brushstrokes charged with atmospheric vibrations. Light thus reverberates on objects, but without interfering with the precise description of reality. The entire view is thus characterized by a clear luminosity that is revealed, by contrast, in the play of shadows. The use of a palette of soft and delicate colors also serves this purpose.
Aldo Conti was a Milanese painter, born in 1890 and died in 1988, who worked primarily in Liguria. He learned painting in Paris in the studio of Paul De Castro. He participated in all the exhibitions of the Permanente and the Sindacati in Milan; in those of the Cultori e Amatori di Belle Arti and in the First Quadriennale in Rome; he also exhibited at the Paris Salon and in Buenos Aires.
