Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In his landscapes, Aldo Gavaggi reaches the pinnacle of his expressionist poetics. The composition is entirely resolved in the foreground, with no allowance for depth. The highly abstract subject has a synthetic character. The view is resolved by the painter in pictorial layers imbued with gesture, in a dynamic and iridescent chromatic texture. In this space, the painter's diaphanous and almost instinctive marks indicate the vegetation. In this way, Aldo Gavaggi is able to go beyond the simple recording of sensory data, creating a landscape with emotional and spiritual implications. Even in his landscape painting, therefore, Aldo Gavaggi confirms the expressionistic nature of his artistic practice.
Aldo Gavaggi was born in Villadossola in 1934 and died in 1983. Critical essays and catalogues have been dedicated to his works. He is mentioned in the Archivio Storico degli Artisti d'Italia, the Annuario Comanducci, the Bolaffi, the Arte Seda guide, and numerous newspapers and magazines. Many of his paintings are held in important foreign galleries, museums, and art galleries (Frankfurt, Vienna, Munich, and many cities in California). In 1954, he participated in the 10th Milan Triennale with an iron sculpture, "Form and Space," and in the same year in an exhibition in Novara, at the Palazzo del Broletto. He subsequently exhibited in Munich, Omegna, Frankfurt, Magenta, Arona, and on several occasions in Domodossola and other towns in the Ossola Valley.
