Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.

Aldo Porcaro reached a pinnacle of pictorial experimentation, decisively abandoning all contact with sensory reality, creating a concrete work of pure abstraction. The work is entirely resolved through the artist's gestures. Indeed, its surface is almost monochrome, set in a yellow-green hue. The paint, however, is dense and full-bodied, allowing the artist to shape the painting's surface through manipulation and molding. This creates a hermetic yet powerfully expressive system of signs, in its incommunicability.
Aldo Porcaro was a painter originally from Bolzano. After graduating from business school in Bolzano, he worked for an Italian bank in Mogadishu, where he met his first wife, Asli. Painting and drawing were his life, and after returning to Bolzano from Africa in the 1970s, he managed to sell his brightly colored "African" paintings well. Porcaro had a lively love life and was a charming character. In the early 1980s, he spent a year in Paris, but, forced to return for financial reasons, he never found his calling. Mentally unstable, he lived a life of wanderlust in his final years; he died in Bolzano hospital of heart disease on October 30, 1991.
