Description of the work
Description of the work
The work can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
Aldo Riso is a master at capturing his homeland, Puglia, and, more generally, the vistas of Southern Italy. He does so with a traditional approach that has led him to embrace a simple yet effective realism, featuring solitary places filled with light. In this silkscreen, one can see how the defining characteristic of Riso's landscapes is an intense use of white. The white of the light, reflecting off the walls of the houses, predominates in the composition, almost transfiguring reality. This allows the artist to convey the warmth of his homeland through the use of vibrant, luminous colors. In this work, the artist offers a variation in which the southern landscape/seascape backdrop serves as a backdrop for the vibrant depiction of two uniformed Carabinieri.
Aldo Riso, born in Santa Maria di Leuca in 1928 and passed away in Rome in 2008, was an artist from Puglia who made his homeland his favorite subject, portraying it with a refined watercolor technique. This earned him extraordinary popularity. His career began with his first exhibition in 1956, and he subsequently exhibited his works not only in Italy but also in Cologne, Berlin, Vienna, Paris, Philadelphia, Belgrade, Athens, Barcelona, Madrid, Montreal, Toronto, New York, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Asuncion, and South Africa.
