Description of the work
Description of the work
In his works, Aldo Riso often leads us by the hand through the landscapes of his native Puglia: deep seas, cerulean skies, and white houses standing out against vast expanses of blue. His landscapes are almost always desolate, empty of city dwellers, conveying a sense of peace and harmony. Here too, he presents us with a seaside alley, bright and with soft colors.
Clearly, a work is also subject to the technique used to render it. Silkscreen printing is a graphic design technique and perhaps the most versatile. Originating in China, it has been used in Europe since the 18th century. This graphic design technique allows for the use of textured, metallic, and other inks, as well as the application of the chosen design to various types of substrates. The word itself means "writing on silk" (since the first looms were made of this fabric). The underlying idea is to use a permeable fabric, which is treated so that the mesh of the fabric is closed, preventing the color from penetrating the substrate. This matrix is then placed on the desired substrate, and the color is applied using a squeegee, leaving its imprint in the desired shape. Today, photosensitive films are commonly used instead of silk.
Aldo Riso, in his landscape paintings, embraces a simple realism, characterized by solitary places filled with light. The white light, reflecting on the walls of the houses, predominates in the composition, almost transfiguring reality into a fantastical, imaginary world. This allows the artist to convey the warmth of his homeland through the use of colors filled with luminous vibrations.
Aldo Riso was born in 1928 in Santa Maria di Leuca, in the Province of Lecce. He earned a degree in Law, but at the same time, from a very young age, he delved into painting, primarily watercolors. Deeply attached to his homeland, Apulia is his favorite subject, portraying numerous views of both his region and Southern Italy. His public debut came in 1956 with his first exhibition, which launched a long career that allowed him to exhibit his art not only in Italy but also in Cologne, Berlin, Vienna, Paris, Philadelphia, Belgrade, Athens, Barcelona, Madrid, Montreal, Toronto, New York, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Asuncion, and South Africa. His work is characterized by clear, intense, and radiant painting, where landscapes are bathed in the light that only watercolor can render in its characteristic transparency, while also embracing oil painting and graphic art. Houses, boats, and fishermen breathe a rarefied air, suspended beneath relentless skies and crystalline seas. Aldo Riso died in Rome in 2008.
