Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this portrait, artist Aldo Scabbia demonstrates his skill in achieving a perfect naturalistic rendering with a highly graphic technique. The extremely precise drawing captures every detail of the physiognomy, providing a highly detailed account of the face. Using a soft touch, the artist highlights the volumes, highlighting them vividly. Finally, with lively hatching, he creates a complex interplay of shadows. Scabbia uses a much quicker brush stroke for the outlines, thus making the figure appear more alive and dynamic in space. The artist also focuses on the expression of feelings, which, as we can see in this work, are always intense and emotional.
Aldo Scabbia was born in Rovigo in 1910. He studied painting at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan under the guidance of Aldo Carpi. From 1939, he was a tenured professor of Drawing and Art History in scientific high schools. He lived for 13 years in Eritrea and Ethiopia, actively participating in the artistic life of these two countries and teaching in Italian high schools. He organized numerous solo exhibitions and exhibited in international group shows, earning several awards, including First Prize for Drawing, First Prize for Painting, and First Prize at the International Painting Exhibition in Addis Ababa. He painted a large portrait of Emperor Haile Selassie, which is housed in the Imperial Ghebbì along with 24 of his other works. Over 3,000 paintings and drawings are held by private collectors in Italy, Sweden, France, Russia, the United States, Eritrea, Ethiopia, England, Israel, and South Africa.
