Description of the work
Description of the work
from a private collection
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, and Puvis des Chavannes, who, while using a primarily figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references. Many of Aldo Tuis's works are distinguished precisely by their complex and elaborate iconography: the artist often draws inspiration from real, everyday situations and distorts them through his pictorial interpretation. In this case, however, contact with reality is almost entirely lost, remaining solely in the use of a figurative language.
This work is typical of the work of artist Aldo Tuis, who, in his depiction of the human figure, transcends contingent anatomical and physiognomic data to express more complex concepts. Thus, we can see how the grotesque figures in this work are outlined with a bold black line that highlights their elongated forms and caricature-like features. The faces are expressionist masks, while the bodies are bent into unnatural positions, expressing an existential tension. The color, applied in light washes in the decontextualized space, reaffirms the work's symbolic nature.
Aldo Tuis was born in 1935 in San Donà di Piave. He attended the Brera Academy and the art school at the Castello. He currently lives and works in Milan. He has participated in several impromptu exhibitions in Brianza.
