Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
Lorenzo Alessandri's style leans toward concise and essential representation. His painting, with its surrealist overtones, even when the subject is plausible, does not seek a naturalistic rendering. Drawing on historical surrealism, Alessandri favors a hyperrealist and hyperobjective language that focuses on the exaltation of formal values and plasticity. In this sense, this artist's technique is excellent in reproducing almost sculptural figures, permeated by reverberations and reflections of light. From a conceptual perspective, the representation acquires an enigmatic atmosphere, placing them in a refined dreamlike dimension, also determined by the interpretation of color. Lorenzo Alessandri's paintings are complemented by abstract spaces that present dynamic compositions of chromatic impastos.
Lorenzo Alessandri, born in Turin in 1927, died in Giaveno in 2000. When he left Turin, he had already experienced the artistic circle known as the "Soffitta macabra" and the magazine Surfanta (from SURrealismo and FANtasia). It was also a true artistic movement, adopting a language that contrasted sharply with the abstract and conceptual styles in vogue at the time, which also drew inspiration from the "fantastic and visionary" painters Silvano Gilardi (Abacuc), Lamberto Camerini, Enrico Colombotto Rosso, Giovanni Macciotta, Mario Molinari, and Raffaele Ponte Corvo. Throughout his artistic career, he held dozens of solo exhibitions and participated in approximately 300 group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. He leaves behind an enormous artistic legacy, consisting of approximately 400 oil paintings on masonite and over 1,100 on wood and cardboard; over 900 Pascals, hundreds of watercolors, temperas, etchings, woodcuts, lithographs, silkscreens, approximately 60 ex libris and approximately thousands of pencil drawings of life studies.
