Description of the work
Description of the work
Born in Rome on July 26, 1944. An internationally renowned artist, trained in the art studio according to the glorious Italian tradition, after a debut in painting, he expressed his figurative talent in sculpture, resulting in works of extraordinary plastic and dynamic power. In his work, mythological and religious inspirations combine with the anxieties of modernity, giving rise to a form that is both classical and new, striking in its movement and poise.
From jewelry to monumental sculptures, including fountains, portals, sketches, and extraordinary drawings, you have the opportunity to witness a truly extraordinary "rhapsody of beauty." In 1985, with three painters, Alessandro Romano founded the New Italian Manner, a cultural movement that, drawing on the Transavanguardia movement, revived the figure, imbuing it with conceptual influences that garnered enormous interest in Italy, Europe, the United States, and Russia.
In March 1986 he held his first solo exhibition in New York, which, due to its extraordinary success with the public and sales, was followed by a second in 1987. In 1989, a major exhibition dedicated to the “New Italian Manner” was held at the M. Schwarz Gallery in Los Angeles.
He is the author of the monumental polychrome bronze work, " The Shield of Achilles ," inspired by the eighteenth canto of Homer's Iliad. His first work was acquired by the President of the Italian Republic, Francesco Cossiga, through the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome for the Quirinale Palace in 1990. In 1991, he was invited to join the prestigious Accademia Nazionale di San Luca and was named an Academician.
Furthermore, since 1991, the master Alessandro Romano has been present at the Permanent International Sculpture Exhibition in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, on the French Riviera, with large works. In 1994, a major solo exhibition of the master's work was held at JFK International Airport in New York, and given the widespread acclaim it received, it was extended from three to six months.
For the GREAT JUBILEE OF 2000, he created “ Mercurio ”, a six-metre polychrome bronze, placed in the judicial city of Rome, in Piazzale Clodio.
He is the author of the official medal of the GREAT JUBILEE OF 2000, dedicated to “GOD THE FATHER”, two versions in gold and one in silver.
On the occasion of the GREAT JUBILEE OF 2000 dedicated to catechists and religion teachers, on December 10, 2000, in the PAUL VI Hall, he held, at the invitation of the Holy See, a testimony on Contemporary Sacred Art.
Of particular importance in the Sacred Art production of the master Alessandro Romano are the creations of portals for churches and basilicas, in which he, preferring large, unitary scenes, each time delves deeply into the theological theme so as to always achieve extraordinary results in terms of content and imagery. In August 2000, on behalf of the Diocese of Sorrento, he created the large triptych of six-meter-high polychrome bronze portals “ JANUA MM ” dedicated to the Holy Trinity in the Basilica of San Michele Arcangelo in Piano di Sorrento.
For the Benedictine Order of Subiaco, in August 2000, after having renovated the square, he placed a large polychrome bronze sculpture dedicated to the eighteen-year-old St. Benedict. In June 2001, he created a large, three-meter-high polychrome bronze statue of John XXIII. For Easter 2001, he created a large polychrome bronze Paschal Candle for the church of Pietramontecorvino (Foggia).
