Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on a Pop aesthetic in its use of stereotypical images and their mechanical reproduction. Pop Art was born in the United States in the second half of the 20th century as a result of artists' interest in and criticism of the contemporary "consumer society." All expressions of Pop Art presuppose a sort of double bond with the world of consumerism and the mass media. On the one hand, the artwork is reduced to a mere consumer product, thanks to the use of advertising language in the works and their serial reproduction through mechanical processes. On the other, it is the advertising images and consumer goods themselves that become works of art, as the most genuine and truthful expression of the new society. Alex Turco's work is inspired by a Pop aesthetic in its use of icons of mass culture and its reflection on the possibility of serial reproduction of artworks, developing innovative techniques based on his experience as a graphic designer.
The work clearly exemplifies Alex Turco's language, poised between mass imagery and reflections on reproduction techniques. The postcard image, the quintessential pop object, pervades the entire composition, and it is on this surface that Turco's graphic elaboration unfolds. The view is reconfigured according to a pictorialism that follows the lines of American Abstract Expressionism and, in particular, the reworkings of pop objects by Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. Thus, the image is tainted by extensive dripping, or the pouring of paint.
Alex Turco, an artist of Friulian origins, born in 1979. He lives and works in Miami. He is an art designer who practices an extraordinary combination of material, photography, and multimedia graphics to create large decorative panels for homes.
