Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on a Pop aesthetic in its use of stereotypical images and their mechanical reproduction. Pop Art was born in the United States in the second half of the 20th century as a result of artists' interest in and criticism of the contemporary "consumer society." All expressions of Pop Art presuppose a sort of double bond with the world of consumerism and the mass media. On the one hand, the artwork is reduced to a mere consumer product, thanks to the use of advertising language in the works and their serial reproduction through mechanical processes. On the other, it is the advertising images and consumer goods themselves that become works of art, as the most genuine and truthful expression of the new society. Alex Turco's work is inspired by a Pop aesthetic in its use of icons of mass culture and its reflection on the possibility of serial reproduction of artworks, developing innovative techniques based on his experience as a graphic designer.
This work clearly exemplifies Alex Turco's artistic language, poised between mass imagery and reflections on reproduction techniques. In this case, a hyperrealistic image is presented, enlarged to a macroscopic scale. The obsessive attention to detail generates a strong sense of illusion that contrasts with the usual expressionist smearing that characterizes Alex Turco's work. The hyperreal image is reconfigured with extensive dripping, or the application of paint. Furthermore, the artist opens the painting to other influences. The gilded surface references the provocative sublimation of luxury and consumerism into art, a theme that recurs in other works by the Friulian artist. However, the evident antique patina that Turco creates in this work, with the extensive cracking that causes fractures on the surface, seems to be a reference to ancient Byzantine icons. The artist thus establishes a connection between sacred icons of the past and pop icons of the present.
Alex Turco, an artist of Friulian origins, born in 1979. He lives and works in Miami. He is an art designer who practices an extraordinary combination of material, photography, and multimedia graphics to create large decorative panels for homes.
