The showcase features a pair of works by Russian artist Vladimir Igoshev, showcasing two highly characteristic and recurring subjects in his career. On one hand, the landscape, depicted in an evocative and concrete harbor scene that reflects the painter's realist spirit. On the other, one of Igoshev's most popular themes, the portrait of an Eskimo, explored by the artist in various subjects and variations on the theme.
Vladimir Igoshev's artistic style, which is rooted in the context of the former Soviet Union, takes on a very specific connotation within a realist/socialist pictorial context. Indeed, the subjects chosen by Igoshev, both in landscapes and portraits, imply less a desire to replicate sensory data than to frame a social reality, linked to a popular everyday situation, such as that of a port or a specific ethnic community. The work, therefore, is imbued with a sociological quality, typical of realist painting. Thus, in the port view, the episode is captured from popular daily life and captured on the canvas fleetingly, practically instantaneously, as if the artist had taken a snapshot on the spot. From this perspective, the composition of the work is highly eloquent; the scene is framed with an almost casual, slightly diagonal angle. The artist is not interested in carefully calibrated balances in the composition, but prefers to imbue the scene with an authenticity that can be found in its temporary and unrepeatable nature. Formally, too, Igoshev pursues his realism to the fullest, with an extremely lively and dynamic style, aimed at capturing all the light and atmospheric vibrations of the scene. Typical is the palette, which tends toward brown colors, a theme also found in the portrait of the Eskimo. In this case, Igoshev's desire for realism is expressed through a humane and meticulous exploration of a specific ethnic reality, always conducted through his extraordinary pictorial style, charged with vibrations, in this case also existential.
Vladimir Alexandrovich Igoshev (1921 Askino - 2007 Moscow) was a Russian painter, graphic artist, and teacher. A member of the Union of Artists of the USSR, his research focused primarily on the diverse ethnic and geographical realities that made up the former Soviet Union and beyond. Igoshev was particularly interested in the Eskimo population. Between 1950 and 1990, he traveled extensively to North Korea, China, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Mongolia, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, the Netherlands, Belgium, West Germany, and France. The result of these travels was the famous exhibition "Through Foreign Countries." The artist's paintings are held in museums and private collections in Austria, Great Britain, Argentina, Belgium, Hungary, Germany, and others. More than 250 of his works are held in museums and galleries throughout the former Soviet Union. Nine paintings are held in the State Tretyakov Gallery, and eleven in the State Russian Museum.
