Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). This Maternity by Presotto is divided between the domestic realism of the subject and the surreal, dreamlike context that characterizes the overall setting of the work.

Alfio Presotto's style, in most of his work, tends toward hyperrealism. Indeed, the painter's desire to objectively convey to canvas, with cold lucidity, the sensory data before his eyes. The artist also demonstrates a fine technique, reminiscent of Flemish painting, in the precision with which he reproduces various materials and the effects of light falling on them. However, he also does not shy away from certain painterly effects that softly blur the objects in the work. Even in this Maternity, we can see how Presotto has faithfully reproduced the subjects' physiognomies, evident in their plastic exaltation. The subjects are enveloped by the folds of the sheet, creating a concrete and measurable space. All this is set within a visionary framework of great symbolic significance, in whose representation Presotto unfolds his formal perfection in an effervescent polychromy of nuanced hues.
Alfio Presotto is a Venetian painter born in 1940. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and, in 1960, joined the Realism group in Milan.
