Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

In this work, Alfonso Monfardini has depicted a splendid nocturne. His pictorial language is entirely based on color, and as we can see, delicate tonal transitions determine space and light. Thus, the entire composition achieves a perfect and harmonious chromatic unity. The rapid, cursive brushwork, inspired by impressionism, ensures a fresh execution.

Alfonso Monfardini was a Mantuan sculptor and painter, born in 1887 and died in 1965. He initially trained at his hometown's art school and then won a scholarship to attend the Cignaroli Academy in Verona. A well-known and popular artist, his studio on Via Chiassi became a meeting place for many painters. In 1917, he participated in the 66th Exposition organized by the Société des Artistes Indépendants at the Grand Palais des Champs-Elysées in Paris. In 1920, he exhibited at Palazzo Valenti Gonzaga.
