Description of the work
Description of the work
We are faced with a battle scene. These depictions have been a recurring subject throughout history since ancient times; just think of the mosaic of the Battle of Issus, housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, and its developments. Let's not forget the works of Piero della Francesca and the famous battle scenes in the Salone dei Cinquecento. Executed for celebratory, historiographical, or narrative purposes, battle paintings were popular until the Romantic era of 19th-century historical painting. In this case, we are faced with cavalry seen from the rear, galloping toward the heart of the battle.
The battles painted by Alfredo Nannoni are characterised by the artist's highly personal interpretation of the theme. It's a subject he refined, creating several works. While knights are often reduced to a mass of colors, in this case the depiction is clearer, and the figures are easily distinguishable. The composition is precisely designed to divide the painting diagonally into two distinct areas. The entire painting is rendered in very simple colors, as if the artist had taken primary colors and mixed them with darker tones to create a somber atmosphere appropriate to the theme.
Alfredo Nannoni was born in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa in 1945. His works are held in important collections both in Italy and abroad. He has exhibited his paintings in numerous shows. Nannoni specializes in battle scenes, which he always interprets with a highly personal style that elegantly and dynamically highlights the drama of wartime events.
