Description of the work
Description of the work
Nannoni is a painter renowned for his landscape paintings. While he often limits himself to monochrome and a more rigid brushstroke, especially when depicting an architectural context, here, where the setting is a seascape, his hand is lighter. For painters, landscape painting is above all a way to deepen their interpretation of the atmospheric light that envelops nature. In this case, we note that the scene is stripped of elements, focusing exclusively on sea and sky, but the dark light also helps to lull the painting into a mysterious aura.
While landscape is a recurring theme in Nannoni's poetics, what strikes us here is the chromatic rendering. Where the painter normally limits himself to a monochrome of various shades of gray and black, here he opts for blue. The tones remain dark, but the overall impact is very different from his other tonal paintings. Throughout his career, Nannoni has developed a figurative language and poetics all his own. His narrative is strongly expressionistic and tends toward extreme synthesis, seeking to analyze the scene with quick, intuitive brushstrokes, thus approaching abstraction. Where he normally uses more linear brushstrokes, here he subtly shifts his hand to achieve a softer application.
Alfredo Nannoni was born in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa in 1945. His works are held in important collections both in Italy and abroad. He has exhibited his paintings in numerous shows. Nannoni specializes in battle scenes, which he always interprets with a highly personal style that elegantly and dynamically highlights the drama of wartime events.
