Description of the work
Description of the work
Throughout his career, Nannoni often dabbled in landscape analysis, but he portrayed it in his own unique way. His paintings, executed with a highly expressive and dramatic style, are recognizable both for their hues and their concise style. Here, he likely depicts the outskirts of a rural landscape. While an architectural structure can be glimpsed on the left, a couple of farmhouses nestled in the hills can be seen in the background. The cypress trees hint at the fact that we are in Tuscany, where the painter lived.
Throughout his career, Nannoni has developed a figurative language and poetics all his own. His narrative is strongly expressionistic and tends toward extreme synthesis, seeking to analyze the scene with rapid, intuitive brushstrokes, thus approaching abstraction. His highly synthetic style distorts landscapes, and he unfolds the scenes entirely in close-up, thus creating a strong two-dimensionality that almost negates perspective. In this case, he juxtaposes strongly vertical and horizontal elements to create the grid of his landscape. All this reinforces the dynamism but also the hermeticism of the scenes. He uses his signature palette, with impastos tending toward gray and black, transcribing the landscape in monochrome.
Alfredo Nannoni was born in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa in 1945. His works are held in important collections both in Italy and abroad. He has exhibited his paintings in numerous shows. Nannoni specializes in battle scenes, which he always interprets with a highly personal style that elegantly and dynamically highlights the drama of wartime events.
