Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships can be considered part of the genre scene group, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships, or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents.
Alfredo Nannoni has developed a distinctive form of language in which the elegantly symbolic narrative is presented through a painting style tending toward expressionistic synthesis, distorting the subjects and distorting them with a vehement pictorialism. This reinforces the dynamism but also the hermeticism of the scenes. In this painting, synthesis is taken to a very high level, and a type of abstract representation prevails in a two-dimensional space. Regarding the palette, Nannoni's usual grayish impastos are contrasted by the presence of brighter hues.
Alfredo Nannoni was born in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa in 1945. His works are held in important collections both in Italy and abroad. He has exhibited his paintings in numerous shows. Nannoni specializes in battle scenes, which he always interprets with a highly personal style that elegantly and dynamically highlights the drama of wartime events.
