Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic currents. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. In the case of Alfredo Sosabravo, his artistic language might be considered surreal in terms of its subject matter, but formally it draws on both Cubism and Pop Art.
Artist Alfredo Sosabravo is the creator of an original style that has made him famous worldwide, drawing on diverse influences and reworking them into a personal vision. His reality is systematically transfigured into a visionary world of mechanical-looking characters, hybrid beings assembled from various mechanical and anthropomorphic parts. For this reason, his work straddles Surrealism, due to the dreamlike nature of his subject matter, and Cubism, due to the mechanomorphic, geometric aspect of his depictions. Furthermore, formally, the aggressiveness of his colors, similar to those of advertising graphics, strongly ties Sosabravo to Pop Art and, more specifically, to influences from the world of street art (such as Keith Haring). Another of Sosabravo's distinctive traits is treating his canvases as assemblages, stitching together individual parts.
Alfredo Sosa Bravo, known as Sosabravo, is an artist of Cuban origin, born in Sagua la Grande in 1930. He was fascinated by fellow citizen Wilfredo Lam and began to devote himself to painting and ceramics, which led him to move to Albisola, Italy. From the late 1960s and early 1970s, he developed his art, which featured mechanical contraptions made from mechanical parts. He created several murals, such as in Marzabotto and Pian di Venola. In Murano, he created numerous glass sculptures.
