Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s, encompassing all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.
In this painting, Alfredo Spano reveals a highly creative surrealist and expressionist streak. Iconographically, it's very clear that we're dealing with a subject that doesn't claim to represent reality, but rather to convey hidden, underlying messages. While the interpretation harks back to Surrealism, the execution of the painting further leans toward Expressionism, due to the remarkable synthesis of its interpretation. The subject is delineated in an abstract manner, while the application of color is swirling, at times reaching a heightened pictorial quality with highly expressive effects. Thus, the space almost seems to dematerialize, while the face emerges plastically, giving the work a visionary quality.
As we can see from an analysis of this work, Alfredo Spano is an artist who loves to evoke visions of the fantastic and the grotesque. His iconography is highly elaborate and expresses a great creative flair. His language tends toward expressionism, underpinned by a vibrant pictorialism.
