Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships or boats can be considered part of the genre scene group, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents.
Alfredo Stengher's style, consistent throughout his work, is grounded in a keen sense of color and an immediate, cursive application of color. With just a few touches of color, the painter manages to construct his subjects, ensuring a remarkable immediacy in his reproductions from life. It can therefore be said that Stengher's stylistic register undoubtedly stems from a distinct impressionistic influence, but this is taken to the extreme of immediacy and rapid execution. In this way, drawing particularly on the Tuscan Macchiaioli tradition, Stengher captures the vibrations of light and atmosphere on objects, yet at the same time exerts a more pronounced synthesis of sensory data, achieving a highly lyrical representation of reality. Stengher's palette reflects this lyrical intimacy with nature and reality, featuring a pale, light-filled palette.
Alfredo Stengher was a Livorno-born artist born in 1920 and died in 2000. Primarily working in landscape painting, he interpreted reality with a highly cursive and immediate technique, akin to post-impressionism. His underlying poetics are naturalism and realism, marked by an intimate lyricism and grounded in a synthesis of sensory data through color.
