Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The drawing is clearly a sketch, an artist's study, but it is a precious testimony to Amedeo Modigliani's artistic language. The embrace between the two costumed figures is captured by Modigliani with a refined graphic line that follows a frenetic and lively rhythm. This drawing style, on the one hand, summarizes the subject, as in Expressionism. On the other, however, it systematically analyzes it, leveraging a breakdown of planes and a multiplicity of viewpoints, as in Cubism. Compared to Modigliani's easel work, this drawing shows us a different side of the Livorno-born artist, more lively and instinctive.
Amedeo Modigliani was a painter originally from Livorno, where he was born in 1884. His entire career, however, developed in Paris, where he moved in 1906 and where he died in 1924 of tuberculosis. There, he became acquainted with the historical avant-garde movement, particularly with Cubism, of which he was never a member. Instead, he developed his own original style based on a pure graphic line. His faces always have an archaic appearance, flat and iconic, with the typical deformations of a distinctive and highly personal artistic language (long necks, pursed mouths, black almond-shaped eyes).
