Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world, as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.
Anchise Picchii is a prominent representative of the Labronica School, and his pictorial language is therefore distinguished by the prevalence of color over line and a synthetic brushstroke that represents a reinterpretation of the Tuscan Macchiaioli tradition. His pictorial production demonstrates a highly personal and refined style. While he maintains a figurative approach, he also seeks to push it to a higher level of expression. This pushing concerns primarily the form, whereby the figures are synthesized with a synthetic brushstroke. Then comes the color, which is applied in bright, luminous tones with rapid brushstrokes.
Anchise Picchi was born in Crespina in 1911 and died in Collesalvetti in 2007. He trained primarily in Pisa. In Florence, he met Pietro Annigoni. In 1942, after a stay in Greece, he settled in Collesalvetti. In 1956, he opened his own studio in Livorno, becoming one of the leading representatives of the Gruppo Labronico. His career culminated with a retrospective at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence in 1978. Another retrospective of his work was held in Collesalvetti in 2011.
