Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The work is highly representative of Anchise Picchi's pictorial language. We can see how the painter pursues an almost obsessive search for the vibration of light, which leads to an elaborate, almost Divisionist, hatching style. The image, therefore, appears fragmented within a complex painted surface, and the artist leaves it to the human eye to recompose the image. The social theme, linked to the world of work, is also akin to the poetics of Italian Divisionism.
Anchise Picchi was born in Crespina in 1911 and died in Collesalvetti in 2007. He trained primarily in Pisa. In Florence, he met Pietro Annigoni. In 1942, after a stay in Greece, he settled in Collesalvetti. In 1956, he opened his own studio in Livorno, becoming one of the leading representatives of the Gruppo Labronico. His career culminated with a retrospective at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence in 1978. Another retrospective of his work was held in Collesalvetti in 2011.
