Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting depicts a New York urban scene, complete with skyscrapers, traffic, street signs, and the American flag. At the center of the composition is an unusual element: a leopard resting on a traffic light, as if perfectly at home there. The animal provides a striking contrast with the city environment and transforms an everyday scene into something quite unlike anything else.
Andrea Baruffi's style combines realistic precision and surreal irony. The artist captures clear and orderly urban atmospheres, with references to Edward Hopper, but introduces unexpected details that unsettle the viewer. His painting is situated in a context that engages with contemporary realism and a sensibility close to Pop Art, with its focus on urban icons and symbols of American society. At the same time, the surreal element evokes metaphysical suggestions, creating images suspended between the everyday and the imaginary. This results in a personal and recognizable pictorial language.
Andrea Baruffi was born in 1949 in Lizzano in Belvedere, in the province of Bologna, where he lives and works. After graduating in Architecture in Florence, he moved to the United States, where he worked as an illustrator for major newspapers and magazines such as the New York Times, Newsweek, Time, and Fortune. Since the 1990s, he has also devoted himself to painting, developing a personal style that blends urban influences and visionary irony. He has exhibited in Italy and abroad, from Rome to Milan, Turin, Bologna, Boston, New York, and Singapore. His work is now internationally recognized.
