Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. This type of subject can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, and Puvis des Chavannes, who, while using a primarily figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references. Andrea Mancini's paintings often feature reproductions of simple objects, yet placed within a dreamlike context with a magical atmosphere and charged with underlying meanings.
The magic and refined symbolic meanings inherent in Andrea Mancini's paintings are also fueled by his refined pictorial form. He relies on ancient techniques, drawing on a decidedly classical conception of painting. Yet, at the same time, everything is transfigured, in a strongly dreamlike manner, by this painter's lightness of touch. Objects almost seem to lose their form and take on a diaphanous, ethereal appearance. This is possible thanks to a highly advanced technique of light, transparent paint glazes, which unites the entire surface of the work in an enchanted atmosphere.
Andrea Mancini was born in 1958 in Florence, where he lives and works. He began his career as a designer and illustrator, graduating in Graphic Design from the city's Art Institute. He later also worked as a painter. In 2000, he won the Fiorino d'Argento at the Florence Prize for Visual Arts; in 2002, some of his paintings were acquired by the Marino Marini Museum in Florence and the Diocesan Museum of Florence.
