Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color.
Even in these graphic works, we can appreciate the full quality of Alberto Manfredi's artistic approach. The scenes are composed with a thin, elegant, and sinewy line, which almost dematerializes the objects. The drawing unfolds on a two-dimensional plane, but the line is so intricate that it superimposes the objects in a complex space, similar to Manfredi's Cubist explorations.
Alberto Manfredi was born in 1930 in Reggio Emilia and passed away in 2001. His career unfolded in Rome, where he moved in 1952 to meet Mino Maccari. This began a long collaboration that led Manfredi to become Maccari's assistant in the chair of Engraving Techniques at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, later becoming its full professor. He held numerous solo exhibitions (at the Galleria del Milione and the Galleria Il Mappamondo in Milan, at the Galleria Pananti in Florence, at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, and at the Bouquinerie de l'Institut in Paris). A few months before his death, he was the subject of a retrospective at Palazzo Magnani in his native Reggio Emilia.
