Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is inspired by the story of Paolo and Francesca, made famous by Dante in Canto V of the Inferno. The portrait of Francesca here pairs with a similar medallion featuring the effigy of Paolo.
In his sculptural work, Angelo Canevari always draws on his connection to antiquity. In this work, for example, it's clear how the model draws on medieval commemorative medallions, with the subject perfectly captured in profile. The artist obviously introduces his own, more contemporary sensibility in reworking the subject. From an expressionist perspective, the facial features are simplified for a geometric exaltation of volumes, which also extends to the complex hairstyles.
Angelo Canevari was a Roman artist born in 1930 and passed away in 2014. He trained under Colla, Burri, and Cagli. In the 1960s, his sculptural production focused on recovering an imaginary past filled with saints, warriors, and biblical scenes. He later shifted to creating robotic figures. In the 1970s, he returned to his fascination with antiquity with the Canopic and Hermae cycles.
