Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the representation of an aspect of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
This work by Angelo Canevari is inspired by a popular and expressive world. The composition is compressed and crowded, yet within a complex space that reveals a meditation on Cubist poetics. The faces are marked by work and fatigue, with a markedly expressionist style. Formally, the graphic work reveals remarkable hatching skill. Through a dense network of marks, the artist manages to enhance the subjects' plastic qualities and create a suggestive play of light and shadow.
Angelo Canevari was a Roman artist born in 1930 and passed away in 2014. He trained under Colla, Burri, and Cagli. In the 1960s, his sculptural production focused on recovering an imaginary past filled with saints, warriors, and biblical scenes. He later shifted to creating robotic figures. In the 1970s, he returned to his fascination with antiquity with the Canopic and Hermae cycles.
