Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
The style of painter Angelo Colagrossi, in much of his work, is characterized by the development of a strongly expressionist language. The artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extrapolate the true essence of reality and communicate it on canvas in a vibrant and dramatic manner. For this reason, through the application of color, he develops a highly synthesised process that reduces his subjects to dense, material layers of paint, in which the painter's emotion is also a central focus, conveyed through his brutal gestures. All these elements together constitute the expressionistic power of Angelo Colagrossi's painting. This power is also based on a specific aesthetic choice that reaffirms the dramatic tone of his works, namely, a preference for a blend of warm, brown tones, from which the images emerge almost with difficulty, establishing a struggle with the paint.
Angelo Colagrossi was born in 1960 and lives and works in Rome. His first notable participation was the exhibition “Dodicimenotrentacinquesecondo, giovani artisti a Roma” at the Ex Mattatoio di Testaccio in 1988. In addition to having exhibited in group and solo shows (most recently: in 2017 in the Sala Orsini of Palazzo Chigi, in 2018 at the Galleria Fidia in Rome, and in 2019 at the MACRO Asilo), his works are held in permanent collections at: MAAM, Museum of the Other and Elsewhere of Metropoliz, Rome; DIF Diffused Museum, Formello (RM); BoCs Museum – Monumental Complex of S. Domenico, Cosenza; Vallicelliana Library, Rome; MAON Museum of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Century, Rende (CS); Cittadellarte – Pistoletto Foundation, Collective work of MAAM artists, Biella; MOMA Hostel, Rome; Civic Museum of Ripacandida (PZ).
