Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. This exemplary work by Angelo Davoli, however, expresses the contemporary interest in architecture itself, as harmonious ensembles of pure lines and volumes. Angelo Davoli is an artist deeply fascinated by urban landscapes, contemporary and rationalist architecture, as well as suburban and industrial structures. His works are inspired by the purity of line and a geometric rationality that transcends even a hyperrealistic rendering of the subject. Indeed, the essentiality and rigor of the form are in no way marred by the atmosphere or the light, which also cuts across the subject with a perfectly contoured shadow. There are no luminous vibrations in the architectural perfection of the structure, which Davoli depicts with a compact composition that yields to no existential pressure. This results in a metaphysical dimension perfectly suspended in a timeless moment. The exaltation of line leads Davoli to choose scenographic angles, photographic framings that highlight the perfection and compositional purity of his works. Angelo Davoli was an artist originally from Reggio Emilia, born in 1960 and passed away in 2014. After graduating from the technical industrial institute of his hometown, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. He exhibited his work in a solo show at the Hof & Huyser Gallery in Amsterdam, in the exhibitions Industrial Landscapes (Civici Musei di Reggio Emilia) and Sky-line in Bologna in 2004. Also in 2004, he participated in the Rome Quadriennale and won the Michetti Prize. He has also had exhibitions at the Palazzo Reale, the PAC (Pavilion of Contemporary Art) in Milan, and the Gallery of Contemporary Art in Ljubljana. In 2011, he was present at the Italian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale, curated by Vittorio Sgarbi. In the fall of 2015, an anthological exhibition of Davoli's work took place at Palazzo da Mosto in Reggio Emilia, including numerous paintings, writings, videos, and photographs by the artist.
