Description of the work
Description of the work
The clown was a popular subject among genre painters of the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. Typically, the interpretation of this subject is similar for all artists who attempt it: the clown appears with his makeup designed to evoke laughter and hilarity, but instead displays a melancholic expression. This contrast is intended to spark an empathetic dialogue with the viewer. The clown has also been favored by many painters for another formal reason. Indeed, his flamboyant makeup and colorful clothing offer painters a pretext for creating original color harmonies.
The clown theme is a prominent feature in Angelo Manini's oeuvre, offering both melancholic versions, such as this one, and other extremely lively and vibrant works. To achieve his descriptive and narrative vivacity, the artist extensively develops the subject's design, traced with a bold black line. This allows him to unleash his creativity and inventiveness, characterizing the clown and his room with many delightful, realistic details, accurately rendered. Color then intervenes to maintain the overall liveliness of the work. For this reason, the artist avoids overly painterly effects, instead maintaining a compact and clear application. Thus, the surface of the work emerges in a fresh polychrome of bright, cheerful hues. It's also noteworthy how, in this clown, Manini also opts to experiment with a sort of decomposition with a vaguely Cubist flavor, which further enhances the composition.
Angelo Manini is a Roman painter with a remarkable technique for creating figurative paintings, especially landscapes and clowns. He achieves an excellent naturalistic rendering in his works thanks to the quality of his brushstrokes, full of vibrant light and color, and a strong realist streak that enlivens his creativity.
