Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation only starting in the 19th century. This type of subject coherently reflects the inclinations of the painter Angelo Pascal, whose artistic career is closely linked to the Post-Impressionist movements. Indeed, urban landscapes and scenes of city life are typical themes of that pictorial climate. It is worth remembering that immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the aspects of modernity represented by the urban landscape: the frenzy of the city, the crowds, the traffic, and the typically bourgeois settings.
Angelo Pascal's style is highly recognizable: his main characteristic is the resolution of figurative representations in a stylistic register with strong expressionist overtones. Indeed, we can appreciate how the scene is depicted by exploiting the expressive potential of color. The drawn structure dissolves into a highly synthetic representation. The painted surface transforms into a shifting impasto of dynamic chromaticism made up of bright, luminous hues. His brushstrokes are extremely rapid, intent on recording every single fragment of shifting reality on the canvas with immediacy. For this reason, Pascal's brushstrokes are extremely calligraphic, very subtle, composed of rapid strokes that, while conveying sensory information with immediacy, also ensure a highly lyrical interpretation.
The artist Angelo Pascal, as we can see from an analysis of his works, is rooted in a post-impressionist style of painting. Indeed, in his artistic practice, the immediacy typical of plein air painting combines with a desire to go beyond the mere sensory experience, achieving a representation of reality that is already expressionistic.
