Description of the work
Description of the work
A painting by Paul Klee titled Angelus Novus shows an angel who seems about to turn away from something he is staring at with a fixed gaze. His eyes are fixed, his mouth is open, his wings spread. This is how we picture the angel of history. His face is turned to the past. Where we read a chain of events, he sees a single catastrophe that continues to pile ruin upon ruin and hurls it at his feet. The angel would like to stay, to awaken the dead and repair what has been destroyed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise, which has caged his wings so violently that the angel can no longer close them. The storm pushes him irresistibly into the future, to which he has turned his back, while the pile of ruins before him grows skyward. This storm is what we call progress. Walter Benjamin
