Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Artist Angiolo Volpe's style tends to be figurative, but his reference to pictorial tradition always presupposes an exquisitely personal interpretation and an experimental approach. This is evident in this "triptych," where the definition of the conventional landscape theme takes on an original, minimal, hyperrealist guise. In the view of the beach, the natural elements tend to cancel each other out in an abstract interpretation that focuses decisively on the most intimate essence of what the artist sees and, above all, perceives with his senses. All this in a predominantly hyperrealist form, yet in which the elements seem to dematerialize in an almost paradoxical manner. Thus, beach, sea, and sky overlap seamlessly, and the definition of the landscape becomes a balanced interplay of horizontal bands of color, almost a work of abstract expressionism.
Angiolo Volpe was born in Livorno in 1943 and devoted himself to painting from an early age and throughout his life. Thanks to his origins, he came into contact with the painting of the Macchiaioli movement, which influenced his style and technique. His subjects reflect his love for his homeland: Livorno, the sea, and the Maremma. He has exhibited in Italy and abroad (including America and Japan), garnering critical acclaim. He currently lives in Castiglioncello, where he works in a discreet manner, indulging his gentle temperament.
