The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy and the face has been a primary objective of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the human figure has permeated every era and stylistic movement. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of anatomy, the human body has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. It is precisely within this context that the work of the painter Aniello Mantice moves, placing the human figure at the center of his research. His in-depth investigation of the subject led him to develop a strongly expressionist language that culminates in a pronounced synthesis of the human figure.

Aniello Mantice's works display a marked expressionist vocation, emphasizing the expression of emotion. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of figures, through a highly nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism, such as Fauvism and the Die Brücke movement in Germany. Aniello Mantice embraces them in his language and makes them his own with an original interpretation. In Mantice's works, the human figure is constructed with a deliberately rough brushstroke, dense with textured color. The figures thus constructed appear almost disjointed, rough-hewn in their angular and tormented forms. Space also undergoes the same compression achieved through gestural painting, constructed from fields of color, also treated in a decidedly rough manner. The palette, as in the best expressionist tradition, lights up with violent and aggressive tones, in search of contrasts and clashes that once again convey the complexity of human existence.

Aniello Mantice was an artist originally from Ponticelli. He initially trained at the Art Institute of Naples, where he also earned a teaching qualification. He later moved to Germany to study printmaking, a crucial step in developing his style, which was strongly influenced by German Expressionism. Upon returning to Ponticelli, he began a prolific production, primarily of graphic works, garnering widespread critical and public acclaim and participating in various solo and group exhibitions. He later moved to Sardinia, where he remained for the rest of his life, dedicating himself to teaching graphic techniques.
