Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. This work by Anna Mickalowska depicts a mundane scene of bourgeois extraction. Given the decidedly existential tone the artist chooses to give this subject, the scene seems to be inspired by the avant-garde movement of the early 20th century.
Even in her pictorial language, Anna Mickalowska seems to draw on the historical avant-garde. In particular, her decidedly Expressionist depiction of bourgeois society draws inspiration from the German movement Die Brucke, and the work of Kirchner in particular. The same synthesis of subjects is evident, with a bold line that lends the work a broken, angular rhythm. However, compared to the existential dramas of the German Expressionists, Anna Mickalowska's work seems to express a more cheerful and worldly atmosphere, thanks to the use of a palette of pale, luminous colors. Besides Expressionism, another reference point for Anna Mickalowska is undoubtedly Cubism, evident in the decomposition and fragmentation of space. Indeed, the series of female figures decomposed in a fragmented space seems to hark back to Pablo Picasso's famous Demoiselle d'Avignon.
As can be seen from her work, artist Anna Mickalowska stands out for her compelling research inspired by the avant-garde movement of the early 20th century, with her own personal interpretation. Hers is a bourgeois world, typical of the Belle Époque, inspired by Expressionist and Cubist aesthetics.
