Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.
This still life was executed with a highly classical sense of pictorial technique. The painter pays particular attention to achieving a harmonious composition, in which all elements are arranged in balance. Great importance is also given to formal values, in the sense of a plastic exaltation of the objects. Overall, the work displays excellent pictorial craftsmanship in the depiction of details and in breathing life into the fruit through flashes of light that appear on their surfaces. There is a profound desire for realism in the execution of this canvas, which can be traced back to a characteristic of Northern Italian art, closer to the Flemish regions. The touch is soft and light in constructing the volume of the objects and placing them naturally in a space constructed with rigorous perspective.
Based on an analysis of the work, the artist who executed it could be identified as a local artisan from 19th-century northern Italy. The profoundly realist language and the tonal setting, with a predominance of dark colors, lead us to consider this hypothesis.
