Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
From an analysis of the painting, we can see that the hand that created it is that of an artist who tends to construct the image through a superimposition of light glazes, thus making the subject appear extremely mobile and fused with the atmosphere it occupies. The space itself, in turn, appears vibrant thanks to the artist's technique, which undoubtedly harks back to late nineteenth-century painting (think of the Scapigliatura movement, painters like Tranquillo Cremona). Also very important in this context is the tonal unity of the entire surface, based on a close dialogue between the light of the white (the newspapers and the shirt) and a predominance of browns and grays.
The work bears a signature attributable to the artist Luigi Russo, born in Monopoli in 1904 and who died there in 1992, on the lower right.
