Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting is inspired by the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval art and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). In this case, we have a more complex composition with the representation of various saints (whose names are indicated) who serve as intercessors to the Madonna.
The main peculiarity that makes this work so interesting is that, despite being an Eastern European product, rather than following the Byzantine tradition, the artist seems strongly influenced by Western art. Indeed, there is a strong pursuit of naturalism in the representation rather than the abstraction typical of Russian icons. The artist seeks ease in the poses and physiognomic truth. The draperies appear softer and more natural, and the characters are characterized by a spontaneous liveliness. However, tradition persists in the structure, which is very rigid, entirely hinged on a central axis along which the characters are arranged symmetrically. This type of arrangement gives the composition a certain archaic taste. The space also appears essentially two-dimensional.
The panel has been dated 1872. The Cyrillic inscriptions suggest a Russian artist strongly influenced by Western art. The execution, which displays a certain rigidity and archaism, points to an artist from a local school of popular extraction. We are therefore faced with a precious testimony to intimate and domestic religiosity.
