Description of the work
Description of the work
The design depicts a stylized face inspired by traditional African masks, with closed eyes and a serene expression. A bird, often a symbolic element in African art, sits atop the head. This type of representation is common in West African cultures, where masks are used for rituals and ceremonies.
The work is created in earthy tones on a surface resembling leather or parchment. The linework is delicate yet bold, and the geometric and symmetrical details are reminiscent of the decorations typical of tribal masks. The style may be influenced by traditional Burkinabe or Ivorian art, with references to Baoulé masks.
It's unclear who created the work, but the inscription "Centre de Terrage Ouagadougou Haute-Volta" suggests that the drawing may have been created in an arts or training center in Ouagadougou, when Burkina Faso was still called Haute-Volta (before 1984). It may have been a handcrafted work produced in a local workshop.
