Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory element. The work reproduces a famous painting by Evaristo Baschenis, "Still Life with Musical Instruments," executed by the Bergamo-born painter between 1640 and 1660 and held at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
This work is a perfect reproduction that showcases the distinctive characteristics of Evaristo Baschenis's art. Baschenis, who lived between 1617 and 1677, was also a musician and invented the still life with musical instruments. His works consistently display a perfect realism, which is expressed not only in the detailed reproduction of objects thanks to his excellent use of oil paint, but also in the capture of the effects of light on surfaces. Baschenis's distinctive trait, moreover, was that he always depicted his objects with a certain patina of antiquity. The instruments are covered in a veil of dust (fingerprints can be seen on the mandola case), and the fruit is slightly rotten. Baschenis's still life thus captures the image of the passing of time, of the vanitas inherent in the transience of all things. From a compositional point of view, the work is extremely scenographic: a heavy curtain is raised to reveal the objects which, arranged on multiple levels, create a concrete space in the dark background.
The print was made by an artisan factory specializing in the reproduction of famous works.
